Increase in Minimum Wage

Minimum Wage to Increase from the 1st of January 2024

Ireland will increase its minimum wage to €12.70 per hour on 1 January 2024. The change will affect the base salary requirements for several work permission categories, including Atypical Working Scheme permissions, Internship Employment Permits, Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) Employment Permits, and Contract for Services Employment Permits.

The national minimum wage does not stop an employer from offering you a higher wage. You cannot agree to be paid less than the minimum wage or to do unpaid work unless you are employed by a close family relative or are on a recognised apprenticeship

Budget 2024

The national minimum wage does not stop an employer from. It was announced in Budget 2024 that the minimum wage will increase from 1 January 2024. The national minimum wage for people aged 20 and over will increase by €1.40 to €12.70  per hour. 

Different Rates of pay for certain sectors. Employees in certain sectors have other minimum rates of pay, for example, the security and cleaning sectors. The rules for these sectors are set out in Employment Agreements and Orders (ERO’s) made by Joint Labour Committees.

This is just one of the many new schemes the government is implementing to improve worker’s rights. Others include the Statutory Sick Pay Scheme that was introduced this year. You can read more about that here.
